Will It be Another Manny Pacquiao – Miguel Cotto Fight?

Manny Pacquiao intently watched the Miguel Cotto vs Yuri Foreman fight last Saturday, June 5, 2010 at the Yankee Stadium.  The fight ended with a TKO in the ninth round when Referee Arthur Mercante stopped the fight seeing Yuri Foreman can no longer fight after an unfortunate slip happened in round 7 where he seemed to have twisted his knee. This win makes Miguel Cotto a four-division champion after getting the WBA Super Welterweight belt from Yuri Foreman.

It was Manny Pacquiao’s second time watching Miguel Cotto’s fight on the ring side. First was when Cotto fought and won against Joshua Clottey for the WBO welterweight title in a split decision.  After watching the fight against Clottey, Manny Pacquiao had decided that he could fight Miguel Cotto and be the first boxer in history to win seven world titles in seven different weight divisions which eventually happened.  After the Miguel Cotto – Yuri Foreman fight, Manny might also be thinking of getting his eight world title by fighting Miguel Cotto at 154 lbs.

After Manny Pacquiao accepted Mayweather’s proposal of a 14 days before the fight blood testing, the Mayweathers are again making another demand. They no longer like a 50-50 split on purse but they want a bigger share. And now Floyd Mayweather Jr. is talking about taking another layoff in order for him to attend to other matters in his life outside the ring.  He was talking about one to two years off.  Maybe this was due to depression that Manny Pacquiao won the Fighter of the Year and the Fighter of the Decade award and Freddie Roach won the Coach of the Year of the four straight times, or he just wanted to make more money thus making threats using his retirement plans or he just does not want to fight Manny Pacquiao and lose his “0”.

Whether Floyd Mayweather Jr. is serious or not on the retirement issue remains to be seen.  But if the fight between Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao does not happen this year then a plan B is to be executed by Manny Pacquiao’s camp.  Pacquiao’s camp has their plan B which possibly includes a second match against Cotto, a match with the come backing Antonio Margarito or even with Juan Manuel Marquez who has been begging Pacquiao for the last years for another fight even going to the Philippines and fighting Mayweather just to have another chance.

For me a fight with Miguel Cotto at 154 lbs for a crack at an eight world title in eight different weight divisions is most favorable.  Manny Pacquiao is giving hints that his fight at the end of this year, whoever that opponent would be, could be his last to grant his mother’s wish for him retire and to attend to his duties as a congressman of Saranggani.  What would be a better way to end his career with an eight world title right?
