What More Can Mike Stanton Do?

With Cameron Maybin and Chris Coghlan both struggling for the Florida Marlins, the Marlins have decided it’s time for a change.  That is why the Marlins’ front office made it clear they would call-up prospect Mike Stanton very soon.  It is easy to see why they want to give Stanton, the best prospect in the Marlins organization, a shot at the Big Show.  In Double-A Jacksonville, he is destroying opposing pitching.  He is currently batting .311 with 21 HRs and 52 RBIs.  His 21 homers are tops in professional baseball and are six more than the the player who is in second place in home runs in Double-A.

That is how great his power and home run potential is.  He also has a .441 OBP and a slugging percentage of .726. Scouts have called the 6’5″ 240 pound Stanton the best power hitting prospect to come along in years.  When he does finally get promoted, there are a few minor concerns.  One is that he is still very young and relatively inexperienced.  His highest level of the Minor leagues is Double-A and he is still very young at 20 years-old. Another concern that is common among young prospects is that he strikes out a ton. In 190 at-bats this season, he has struck out 53 times.  Despite these weaknesses, Stanton still has tremendous upside and talent. He has hit some of the longest home runs in the Minors and does not show signs of slowing down.  I believe he will have a similar impact like Ryan Braun and Evan Longoria did when they were called up.

By the end of the 2010 season, he will bat at least .270 with 20 home runs and 50 RBIs.  In fantasy baseball, he will one day be a household name.  Even though there is some risk with him, fantasy players should get Stanton on their radar before everyone else does.  Right now, he is a must own in leagues will twelve teams or more. I believe he will take the spot of Cameron Maybin in the outfield because he is batting an atrocious .223.  For Cody Ross and Chris Coghlan owners, you are safe.  Ross is playing well and Coghlan has five straight multi-hit games.  Remember Mike Stanton’s name because he will soon be one baseball’s premier power hitters and one of its most exciting players to watch play.  Expect Stanton to spark the Marlins’ lineup right away and lead them into a possible playoff run.
