Salt dough crafts are easy to make with basic ingredients from around your house.  Non-toxic and completely safe, salt dough can be used to form many solid shapes.  One great craft to make with salt dough is these easy napkin rings.

Materials Needed for Napkin Rings

In order to make these salt dough napkin rings, you need a quantity of homemade salt dough, craft paint, acrylic sealant, and an oven.  You can also use cookie cutters to make special shapes, or molds to press the clay into.

Salt dough is made by combining 4 cups of flour, 1 cup of salt, and enough warm water to form a clay like consistency.  This dough will last in a sealed container in the refrigerator for several days.

Sculpting the Napkin Rings from Salt Dough

Napkin rings must be a certain size in order to hold your napkins securely.  The first step in making your salt dough napkin rings is to make the ring itself.  This can be done easily by forming a cylindrical log or ribbon-like piece of clay that is long enough to form the napkin ring shape.  Wrap it around a cardboard tube from paper towels or toilet paper that has been covered in plastic wrap.

While this simple ring can hold a napkin, there are plenty of ways to make the salt dough napkin ring more attractive.  You can use your sculpting skills, candy molds, or small cookie cutters to make attractive shapes.  Press the salt dough into these shapes and then attach them to the salt dough ring.

Baking and Finishing the Napkin Rings

After you have the entire napkin ring set complete, you need to bake the salt dough creations in the oven at 200 degrees.  Times of baking will vary depending on the thickness and moisture content in your dough.  Bake them until they are completely hard and dry.  If they begin to get brown, simply cover them with a piece of foil.

The baked napkin rings should be cooled before you begin to decorate them.  You can use acrylic craft glue, gilding, or any type of dye to color the napkin rings.  It is a good idea to use a craft sealant after the paint is dry.  These salt dough napkin rings will be very attractive, but not dishwasher safe.

Making easy napkin rings out of salt dough is a great craft project the whole family can enjoy.  With these easy directions and non-toxic salt dough recipe, you can make napkin rings in any style.  You can make plain napkin rings for everyday, or holiday and special occasion napkin rings as well.
