Soaking bathtubs offer many health benefits including stress relief, alleviation of sleeping problems, and lower blood pressure. Immersing yourself in warm water calms internal organs and endocrine system by stimulating nerves on the spinal cord. A recent study performed at the Mayo Clinic revealed that soaking in hot water gives many of the same benefits as exercising, without straining the heart. This warm blood causes the blood vessels to dilate, which lowers blood pressure by decreasing resistance to blood flow.


The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) links insomnia to stress. Soaking bathtubs are a great stress reliever. Soaking in a bathtub filled with 103 degree F water for 15 minutes before bed is recommended to ease the body and mind into a restful sleep. The change in temperature signals to the body that it’s time for sleep, and the warm water relaxes tense muscles.


Warmth and buoyancy combined in a deep soaking tub can be extremely beneficial to arthritis sufferers. The buoyancy relaxes muscles, and supports and reduces stress on the joints. Medical researchers have recommended exercise under water for arthritis patients. However, soaking bathtubs can have the same effect at home. The warm water will massage the joints and allow for a greater range of motion.


There are many types of hydrotherapy that can be used with soaking bathtubs. A general hydrotherapy treatment consists of soaking in 93-94 degrees F water for 15-20 minutes, then taking a cool shower to send a rush of blood through the body. For back related injuries water temperature should be increased to up to 103 degrees F.

Other types of hydrotherapy include hot and cold baths, and herbal baths. A hot bath taken in a deep soaking tub, or regular soaking bathtubs, will lower energy, relax the body, and stimulate sweating and elimination of toxins. Sea salt can be added, as it promotes healing and prevents infections. Rheumatoid arthritis sufferers will benefit from the addition of Epsom salt.

A cold bath is highly invigorating. Cold water causes the dilation of the small blood vessels. The increase in blood flow actually warms the body, and improves circulation. Herbal baths taken in soaking bathtubs are even more effective, as the entire body can benefit from the herbal material. Essential oils, herb sachets, and bath salts can all be used.

Soaking bathtubs have become extremely popular in recent years due to their relaxing benefits, but they can also improve health and stress related illnesses. A deep soaking tub is not necessary to enjoy a hydrotherapy bath. Any tub can bring bliss and relaxation. Try reading, meditating, or lighting candles and incense while soaking for a more peaceful atmosphere.
