Internet Writer Tips for Writing about Social and Cultural Issues

When you are writing on the internet, you need to realize, first off, that your audience is potentially world wide. This is especially true when you are writing on a website such as Helium or another website that publishes articles that you write yourself. As such, you need to be aware of several things at the start.

The first thing that you need to be aware of when writing about social and cultural issues on the internet, is that certain cultural references and/or certain colloquial references may not translate very well into other cultures. For example, if you say that the Macintosh computer is “the bomb” somebody who doesn’t speak English as their first language and comes from another society or culture may not understand what you mean and they may think that you are talking about explosives.

Another thing that you need to be concerned about, to some degree, is sensitivity. Now, this doesn’t mean that you have to soften your views on an issue and it doesn’t mean you have to change your political or ideological views just to be an internet writer. What it does mean is that you need to be very careful and clear about the way you write when you are writing about social and cultural issues on the internet. Try to stick to facts, details, data and policies rather than focusing on individual societies or cultures in a negative way.

You also need to realize that, if you write something that is especially insensitive from a social or cultural viewpoint, it is likely that that material will be taken down from the website that you are publishing to. Websites that allow you to post your own writing generally have very specific policies when it comes to things like cultural and social commentary, and if you’re not careful you can even find yourself banned from a website. Obviously, if you are publishing it to your own website, of course, that won’t be the case.

Ultimately, the most important thing to remember when it comes to social and cultural issues on the internet is that your audience can be anyone, anywhere.  To have the best and biggest impact be sure to write in a way that your writing can be understood and that it will not offend others. You never will know for sure who it is that’s reading your writing, so you should write in such a way as to offend the least number of possible readers.
