Facebook and High School – Parallel Worlds?

So I am a Generation Xer- graduated from H.S in 1988. So I was just on my high school girlfriends(that is girl who is a friend) Facebook page and asked her for her address. Then I noticed that my photo and this girl I did not like in high school are posted right next to each other on her friends list. Ok so what is going on with Facebook and everyone connecting with old friends. I think it is great that I have found one of my best friends from high school, but I am not so excited about all the other friends that just need to say they are friends with someone so it looks like you have a 100 friends or more.

My girlfriend is great and it is so her to have a 100 plus friends. It is just strange that this is the same ideology as high school. I mean everyone is joining groups. I don’t like posting things that are just random and meaningless, but that is just me. Maybe this is why I never really fit into high school. High school was all about who you knew, how many you knew and what groups you were associated with. God for Bid you did not pay homage to the populars or go the the “right parties”.

I will continue to do Facebook but it is a strange concept to gather together on a virtual world and pretend to be intimate with each other. I think it is good to say hi every now and then, but I am not sure if I want any more action. My cousin just recently had her second child so that was great to see the new born, Lola. I got a lot of birthday wishes. I still like snail mail and paper books- ha!! I am proud of being a Generation Xer- way better than a Baby Boomer and all their baggage. I like to think we bat our cynical eye at everything “popular.” I have not attended one high school reunion and do not think that I ever will. Facebook felt like a reunion today when I looked at those photos so tightly arranged that it reminded my of our high school yearbook- and this is 20 years later!!

Facebook is probably just the beginning of our virtual world contact. It is only going faster into other domains. I just want to keep up so that I am not totally left out of the world moving on
