In a research study conducted about teenagers’ online behaviour, it was found that a quarter of the respondents spent more than 4 hours on the Internet on a daily basis. One third of them engaged in online chat with stranger and 10% even went as far as meeting them.
The organization behind the research suspects that teenagers who are addicted to the Internet may ultimately lose their self-control.
According to a senior social worker, 90% of the addicts, some of whom were only 11 or 12 years old, were found to be males who indulge in playing online games because it gives them a sense of fulfillment.
One 17-year-old adolescent got hooked on surfing the Internet back in junior primary. In the virtual world he is the king-pin, reigning over his net-friends, which gives him a strong sense of satisfaction. However, itis a whole different story in real life and his absession with the Internet has had an adverse effect on his grades.
I think to stop the increasing trend of Internet addictions, from the moment the children start using the Internet, parents should set up a timeable as it is better to be safe than sorry.
