Animals are one of the largest groups of living organisms. There are millions of different species of animals in the world.
Many of them possess amazingly bizarre traits. Here are some of them.
1. Jewfish (Epinephelus itajara)
Goliath Grouper, formerly called Jewfish, starts as female and later changes into a male. They may reach extremely
large sizes, growing to lengths of 8.2 feet (2.5 m) and can weigh as much as 800 pounds (363 kg). They are usually
around 400 lb when mature.
2. Deep-Sea Anglerfish (Linophryne argyresca)
Deep-sea anglerfish eats fish twice its own size. The male, which is much smaller than the female, attaches itself to the
body of the female and remains there throughout its life.
Ant’s antennae are used for smelling, tasting, and touching. Their touch or tactile receptors are located on the feet and
on hairs on the legs.
4. Queen Ants
Queen ants usually live for 5-10 years and continue to lay fertile eggs for several years without further mating.
5. Male Ants
The only function of male ants is to mate with the queens. The male ant dies after mating.
6. Electric Eel (Electrophorus electricus)
Electric eel is a spineless and toothless fish in the Amazon. It can produce a current of up to 650 volts, enough to
shock a human.
7. Argonaut (Argonauta argo)
Argonaut, an eight arm mollusk, closely related to the octopuses. There is a tremendous difference in size between
the female and the male. Female are about 8 in while male are about 1 in only. The male has one arm that is longer
than the others. During mating this arm, which contains the sperm, is detached from the male and become attached
to the female. The males only mate once in their short lifetime, whereas the females are iteroparous.
8. Wandering Albatross (Diomedea exulans)
The Wandering Albatross, a species of the south Pacific, has a wingspan of nearly 12 ft or 3.7 m, the longest of any
9. Scarab Beetle (Scarabaeus sacer)
Scarab beetle is an emblem of immortality.
10. Tawilis ( Sardinella tawilis)
The world’s only freshwater sardine can only be found in Taal Lake, Philippines – locally known as the tawilis
(sardinella tawilis). It is also called freshwater sardinella. It is unique in that it is the only member of the family
Clupeidae that is known to exist entirely in freshwater
11. Garman’s Sea Snake (Hydrophis semperi)
Taal Lake is also home to one of the world’s rarest sea snakes, Hydrophis semperi or Garman’s sea snake. This
particular species is only one of two “true” sea snake species and the only one known to live entirely in freshwater.
12. Anhinga or Snake Bird(Anhinga anhinga)
Anhinga’s feathers, unlike those of most other water birds, are not oily and thus can not repel water. It dries its wings
by stretching them in the sun.
Dragonflies can fly forwards, backwards, and sideways because their wings can rotate, move up and down, or move
forward and backward.
14. Water Beetle
The antennae of a water beetle act as respiratory organ.
15. Archerfish (Toxotidae)
Archerfish can knockdown insects sitting on overhanging vegetation or even flying insects. They can hit their prey at a
distance up to 5 ft or 1.54 m.
Animals are truly amazing creatures. Watch out for more.
