Players of Runescape know it is the most popular free online MMORPG available. Unlike many of its free competitors, Runescape offers a few trade skills that allow a player to make money and vary his character. Woodcutting is the simplest trade skill for a player to take up to earn extra gold for his character.

When going through the Runescape tutorial island, a new player is given an axe. To retrieve lumber from a tree, the player must click on one of the many trees that surround the landscape of the game and cut it down. The basics of woodcutting really are that simple..

Woodcutting Skill

During the tutorial a player is given a bronze axe. This axe can be used to cut down the trees you find throughout the tutorial and can be wielded as a weapon. There are higher level axes throughout the game that require a higher attack skill to wield. (They also do more damage when used as a weapon, but the axes themselves are not important for cutting down trees.) The only advantage to wielding an axe is that it frees up space in your backpack for more lumber.

Tree Types in Runescape

In order to raise the woodcutting skill, a character needs to cut down trees. When a character begins to raise his woodcutting skill, he should cut down the regular tress or evergreen pines located throughout the game. The lumber obtained sells back to vendors for somewhere between 20-50 gold pieces.

After getting the first few levels from normal tress and evergreens, the woodcutter should move onto other tree types that net him more experience and allow him to raise his level faster. Some more advanced tree types are only available to members. These generally sell for more gold or are required for special levels.

A player earns experience every time he cuts down a tree, when he skill level goes up he can gut down hard trees such mahogany, oak, maple, or yew. (Yew is the most difficult tree to cut down.)

Woodcutting as a Money Making Skill

Woodcutting and mining are the 2 trade skills in Runescape that do not require materials beforehand. The lumber obtained from the woodcutting skill is used for other things, including building canoes that allow a player to travel through the game world faster. Even the basic lumber cut from the tutorial island will sell back to a vendor for 20 gold. How much a player can make will depend on how quickly he can get from the trees to a vendor and the available spaces in his backpack. Woodcutting is also useful for other skills in Runescape like cooking and firemaking.
