Player Watch: Jason Heyward

Jason Heyward, OF, Braves

Jason Heyward is hoping to make his presence known as a rookie in 2010. If he is not held back by contractual issues, Heyward is a sure rookie of the year candidate. A big spring could force Atlanta to reward the young outfielder more playing time. I don’t think there is any doubt that he can hit major league pitching, but we just don’t know how well. Heyward is definitely a top prospect and one of the bright new young stars to watch for many years to come. One thing we know about Jason is that he works hard and is blessed with a natural ability–he truly has a sweet swing. He also has an above average defensive skill set, that once he is established, will help keep him in the line-up on a daily basis–that time could be this year.

3/6/2010–So far so good–he isn’t doing horrible, and he is showing some speed stealing two bases in his first five spring games. We are still waiting for the fireworks that come with his power. One of the positive things Jason is showing is his plate discipline. He has struck out only once and walked 3 times. If he keeps that up it could be an indication that he may bring his .323 minor league batting average to the next level, along with his propensity to hit home runs. We will have to wait for his power to manifest before we will see how it affects his batting average. And It is not a matter of “if” we see his power but more like “when,” because it surely will come. It is still too early to begin predicting anything about Heywards success in his rookie campaign, but at this point he could be doing worse–so far it looks cautiously promising.
