Antisocial personality disorder occurs three to four times more in men than in women. It is characterized by a pattern of disregard for the rights of others, and can be recognized by recurring violations of the law. Affected individuals have characteristics of dishonesty and controlling. They engage in illegal behaviors. They are also promiscuous and experience no guilt in hurting others. It is common to these individuals to lie, cheat and steal. They give the impression of being charming and intellectual; they are smooth talker and have a tendency to deny or rationalize their conduct. These individuals do not experience disordered thoughts however they have narrowed and distorted view on the world. These individuals do not have alterations in sensory and perception and they even have average or high average IQs but they have poor judgment. This is because they do not care about legality if their actions and they do not involve morals or ethics in decision making. They are impulsive on the lookout for immediate gratification and lack insight that they couldn’t recognize that their actions are the cause of their problems.
Borderline personality disorder is the most common personality disorder found in clinical settings. It is three times more common in women than in men. These individuals have suicidal ideas and they express their anger and feeling of emptiness through self-mutilation or self-punishment. The consequential physical pain is their way of masking their emotional pain. These individuals often have feelings of helplessness, loneliness, frustrations and they hardly ever feel satisfaction or pleasure. Affected individuals tend to admire other people but they hastily undervalue these people if they do not meet their expectations by some means. They dramatically and abruptly shift their outlooks, their opinions and plans with their lives.
Histrionic personality disorder is seen more in women than in men. According to American Psychiatric Association, these individuals usually seek treatment for depression, unexplained physical problems and difficulty in relationships. They have the tendency to overstate closeness of relationships. They have ridiculous, colorful, playful and seductive behavior. Their speech is indistinct and superficial but deficient in insight and depth.
Temper tantrums, outburst of anger and overreaction can also be observed to these people. About 50 to 75% of people with narcissistic personality disorder diagnosis are men. These clients are arrogant and do not have the ability to realize the feelings of others. They display grandiosity about their accomplishments and importance. They still have intact though processing but insight is poor. These individuals feel superior, demands or admiration and special favors.
