Things you will need:
½ cup (1 stick) butter (not margarine), at room temperature
2 cups of shredded Cheddar cheese, at room temperature
1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon salt
Preheat the oven to 300 degrees.
In a food processor, mixer with a dough hook, or by hand, mix the butter, cheese, flour, salt and cayenne pepper until it is formed into a smooth dough.
Spoon the dough into a cookie press with a flat ridged tip. If you don’t have a cookie press a freezer bag with a corner cut off works just as well.
Pipe the dough into 3 to 4 inch strips onto a lightly greased cookie sheet or a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.
Instead of using a cookie press or freezer bag, the dough can be refrigerated for 30 minutes then rolled out onto a lightly floured surface to a thickness of ¼ inch. Cut into ¼ inch X 4 inch strips with a pizza cutter or sharp knife.
Bake for 10 to 15 minutes or until browned. Move straws from cookie sheet to a rack to cool.
