If you are finding 25% of an amount, then the easiest way to do this is to find ¼ of the number. This is because 25% as a fraction is ¼ (since 25% means 25 out of 100 which simplifies to one quarter). So to find ¼ of your number, either divide the number by 4 or half the number once and then again. In the examples below I will use both methods of finding one quarter depending on which is the easier of the two methods to use.

**Example 1**

Find 25% of 12.

Since 25% is ¼ then all you need to do is to find ¼ of 12.

Therefore, 12 ÷ 4 = 3

**Example 2**

Find 25% of 140.

Again you need to work out ¼ of 140.

Since it’s a bigger number it will be easier to halve the number twice.

½ of 140 = 70 and ½ of 70 = 35.

Sp ¼ of 140 is 35.

**Example 3**

In a clinic of 84 people 25% of the people weigh over 90kg. How many people weigh over 90kg?

Here you need to work out 25% of 84 (that is ¼ of 84)

So ½ of 84 is 42 and ½ of 42 is 21.

So 21 people at the clinic weigh over 90kg.

**Example 4**

In a month Mark earns $2400 dollars. He spends 25% of his monthly earnings on shopping. How much money does Mark spend on shopping?

Here you need to work out 25% of $2400, which is the same as working out ¼ of $2400.

So $2400 ÷ 4 = $600 (Ignore the zeros and do 24 ÷ 4 = 6, and add on the zeros at the end).

So in a month Mark spends $600 on shopping.

**Summary**

So all you need to remember is that 25 percent as a fraction is one quarter. So instead of finding 25% of your number find 1/4 of number.
