Bread – breads are rich in complex carbohydrates which produce a mild sleep-enhancing effect due to the increase of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that promotes sleep.
Warm Milk – a glass of warm milk is one of the good old ways that provide a remedy for sleeplessness. Milk contains tryptophan, which later is converted in serotonin and thereby promotes sleep and prevents waking.
Cheddar, Gruyere, and Swiss cheese is also a good source of tryptophan.
Lettuce – there is an opium-related substance in lettuce and hyoscyarnin. For years, Lettuce has been used by many to promote sleep. If you are suffering from sleep disorders, lettuce should be a regular part of your dinner.
If it is difficult for you to get to sleep at night, you can also try eating High-carbohydrate diets, which increases Serotonin production. Cereals, Fruit pie, potatoes, honey and jam are foods of healthy choice. Remember to eat these foods two to four hours before bedtime.
Other foods such as legumes, nuts, nutritional yeast, poultry products, and fish contain Niacin (Vitamin B3), which is involved in Serotonin production. Thereby, promotes sleep.
Also keep in mind to avoid foods that keeps you awake such as coffee, colas, and even tea.
Foods rich in Tryptophan are best served as snooze foods while foods rich in carbohydrates are best eaten as dinners and bedtime snacks.
