Step One: The first thing you need to help you tame that mane is to make sure that you wash your hair with a shampoo that is formulated for curly hair. Personally, I have found great success with Pantene Hydrating Curls Shampoo plus Conditioner as well as Aussie’s Catch the Wave Shampoo.
Step Two: You may have tried a number of products already that claim to give “perfect curls” and were left with nothing but an empty wallet and a frizzy fro-ish mess. I have spent hundreds (more likely thousands) on products in my lifetime. Some of the best were not the top of the line brands sold in high end salons, but rather products available in most drug stores and pharmacies. Samy makes a whole line of Curl activating products. Purchase Samy Curl Constructor Activating Moose, Samy Big Curls Softening Cream , and Samy Lightweight Gel. You’ll also need some hair spray to hold it all together; try Aussie’s Scrunch Spray.
Step Three: Once you have all of your products, start by washing with the curl formulated shampoo. Once out of the shower, towel dry hair just until it is not dripping wet. Brush out any knots and flip head over. Scrunch hair from the bottom to the roots. Dispense a golf ball sized amount of mousse into hand and continue to scrunch until applied all over hair. Next dispense about a silver dollar sized amount of gel and scrunch into hair as with mousse. Lastly, dispense a quarter sized amount of cream and repeat the scrunching.
Step Four: Now that you have applied the curl products into damp hair, dry with a diffuser until completely dry. Keep head up side down and scrunch hair periodically while drying.
Step Five: Once dry flip hair over and style as desired. For the wildest of hair, you may need a hair pick to finish off the styling. There are days when one side of my hair will be puffier than the other. Trying to flatten the puffy side will not work. Try picking the flatter side to match the height of the puffy side. It should fall naturally a bit on its own and this way your hair is even. Finish with hair spray. Aussie’s Scrunch provides both hold and movement.
Here are some extra tips for styling curly hair:
- Make sure that you have a stylist who is experienced in cutting curly hair. It can make all the difference.
- You may need to adjust the amount of hair product you dispense based on the length of your hair. The mentioned amount was for shoulder length hair and longer.
- Have a sense of humor and a hat for your “bad hair” days…and don’t worry, we all have them!
