With the recent earthquake in Haiti, there have been many claims and odd things said by a few people while there are also many ways to help Haiti as well.
Why are some people claiming that the earthquake had to do with a pact with the devil? Why are some people claiming that Haiti doesn’t need our help? What exactly is the truth behind all of these things? Is it possible to find the truth behind all these things that have been said or done?
Pat Robertson of the 700 Club claims that the earthquake was due to Haiti making a pact with the devil in 1791 and then renewing it in 1991.
Rush Limbaugh has said that we should not give money because the government just wants to spend our money on other things. Haiti does need our money, but Limbaugh says that by donating through the government or the White House because donaters will probably just end up on a mailing list for Obama.
However, both hosts say that they never said donations should not be made to Haiti. Hopefully their hearts are in the right places and they are encouraging donations. I did not hear the comments first hand or hear them in context.
There are a few things to remember.
The first is Jesus’s teaching about natural disasters.
In Luke 13, it states that the Galileans that suffered did not suffer because they were worse sinners than any others. However, the Bible does say to repent. That is not temporal suffering on earth, though. That has to do with a final judgement. Read Luke 13 to read the entire passage.
Also, remember that as the end times near, Jesus predicted that earthquakes will increase. Read Matthew 24 to read more about this.
No matter what, remember the words of Jesus that truly matter in this situation. They are found in Matthew 25. Jesus says, “Whatever you do to the least of these, you do unto me.”
If you are like me, you wish you could do everything to make life better for all the people in Haiti, but you don’t even have a bit of extra money as all the money you have goes towards paying your bills.

As much as it is easy to deny it, we must remember that the United States, Britain, Australia, and New Zealand really are some of the richest countries in the world. Of course, we’re not the only rich countries, but we are quite rich. We need to help in any ways that are possible.
One of these days, any of us could easily be “the least of these.”
