To convert from metres into kilometres all you need to do is divide your number by 1000. On the other hand to change from kilometres to metres multiply your number by 1000. This is because there are 1000 metres in a kilometre. A small m can be used to stand for metres and kilometres can be shortened to km.

So to summarise:

1000 m = 1 km

To change from km to m multiply by 1000.

To change from m to km divide by 1000.

Let’s take a look at look at some examples on converting between metres and kilometres (and vice versa)

Example 1

Convert 3 kilometres to metres.

Here you need to multiply by 1000 as you are changing the amount to metres.

3 × 1000 = 3000m

Example 2

Change 17000 kilometres to metres.

This time you need to divide by 1000, as you are changing km to m.

So 17000 ÷ 1000 = 17m

Example 3

Covert 67.4 km into m.

Again you are changing km to m, so you need to multiply your number by 1000.

67. 4 × 1000 = 67400 m

Example 4

Change 875m into km.

Again you are converting to km so you need to divide by 1000.

875 ÷ 1000 = 0.875m

Example 5

The distance from town A to town B is 7800m. The distance from town B to town C is 6000m. If Ben drives from town A to town B and then from town B to town C, how far has Ben driven? Give your answer in kilometres.

First of all add up the two measurements as you need the total distance travelled.

7800 + 6000 = 13800 m.

Now you need to convert this answer into kilometres. Do this by dividing by 1000.

13800 ÷ 1000 = 13.8 km.
