Next in line for the disappointment throne is baseball great, Mark McGwire. In a statement released via the St. Louis Cardinals, his former team, McGwire said, “I used steroids during my playing career and I apologize,”
“I remember trying steroids very briefly in the 1989-1990 off season and then after I was injured in 1993, I used steroids again,” he confessed. “I used them on occasion throughout the ’90s, including during the 1998 season.”
Mark McGwire went on to say, “I wish I had never touched steroids. It was foolish and it was a mistake. I truly apologize. Looking back, I wish that I had never played during the steroid era.”
Just because one plays during “The Steroid Era” does not mean that they were forced to use these performance enhancing drugs, it sounds a little like a cop-out. However, in his defense, at least he just came out and admitted it, rather than waiting around to be caught, he faced it, and the inevitable criticism.
The reason Mark McGwire cited for his decision to come clean was, as he said, because of his imminent return to professional baseball as the Cardinals hitting coach.
This admission of guilt does not really come as a surprise. In 2005, Mark McGwire was called before Congress and famously (or infamously) stated, “I’m not here to talk about the past”, after being repeatedly asked if he used steroids.
And so, it is with a heavy, but not particularly surprised heart, Mark McGwire gets knocked down off of his pedestal and joins the company of other sports not-so-greats. Among those are Sammy Sosa, Roger Clemens, Alex Rodriguez, Marion Jones, and so many more.
Lets hope we don’t hear anything like this about Michael Phelps in 10 years, I don’t think the world is ready for that big of a let down.
