What have you been hearing lately? How is this affecting you? What we hear has a way of affecting our thinking and the way we think we become. Daily the media bombards us with news which is repeated on and on and with time we start believing the message. There are many contradictory news that could leave one confused if one were to accept such news as gospel truth. This is why it is important to consider where you get your news from and who you are listening to.
Have you ever felt so confident about something and had such faith about it and then you heard a nay sayer and your faith was completely shattered? I have found every time I attest to something my faith is tested on what I have attested to.
A while ago something drastic happened to test the faith of someone that I used to receive emails from for encouragement. This person was also an inspiration to many in the Christian business sector and writes blogs and words of encouragement to others. Not long ago he decided to venture in the area of healing attesting that God is still in the business of healing.
Well, a week after he started the series his wife while exercising fell and hit her head. It was a minor accident but to be on the safe side they decided to have her checked because of the head injury. Perhaps God was preparing him for what was to come through the series. The doctor detected a swelling on her head and ordered further testing.
There was still nothing to make them alert since in any event she had hit her head. The doctor had however suspected something and the results confirmed the suspicion. The wife had brain cancer which was inoperable. You can imagine the shock and the challenge on both their faith.
According to the doctor there was no hope and it was all a matter of time before it was over. But what did God have to say about it? Does this couple accept the doctor’s verdict as gospel truth or should they consult the great physician and believe His word? Scripture says that faith comes by hearing and hearing the word of God.
Hearing the doctor’s words and believing would mean their faith is based on what the doctors said. Consulting the word of God would build up their faith to the effect that it is not over until God says so. Sharing their experience helped build up the couple’s faith through the many encouraging words of other believers.
Remember this happened at a time when the man had started a series to affirm God’s healing power because he believed in it. Now this faith was being tested and the man had to stand on the word of God regardless of the results as proof that he believed what he preached. The word of God teaches that without faith it is impossible to please God, “for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him” Hebrews 11: 6.
Whose report was this couple to believe, the doctor’s or God’s? Eventually the wife did succumb to the illness and died. Yet according to the man although he found himself struggling with doubt while his wife was sick, his wife’s faith on God remained unshakeable to the end. It is in times of adversity that counterfeit faith is destroyed. Adversity reveals where you faith truly lies.
You may say you have faith in God when you are healthy, have money and everything is okay. But what you do when circumstances change reveals where your faith truly lies. Satan suggested to God that the only reason that Job was faithful to God was because God had “made a hedge around him, around his household and around all that he has on every side” Job1:10. According to Satan if God removed the hedge of protection Job would curse God, (Job1:11).
Satan understands human beings more than they understand themselves based on his experience with Eve in the garden of Eden. He tempts all of us, for he even tempted Christ ( Mathew 4: 1-11) because his interest is to steal, kill and destroy, John 10:10. Just like his temptation did not succeed with Christ, he also failed with Job.
In one day Job lost all his wealth and children and although he was grief stricken he did not lose his perspective but fell down in worship of God saying “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return there. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord” Job 1: 21.How many people can truly do what Job did?
Many would question God and suggest they were too good to deserve what had befallen them. Job’s wife actually reacted like most people and asked Job to curse God after Job was struck with a skin disease. Job however rebuked her and told her “you speak as one of the foolish women speaks. Shall we indeed accept good from God, and shall we not accept adversity?’ Job 2:10.
God has not promised us a trouble free life but He has promised to see us through the trials and deliver us if we put our faith in Him. When we are tested like this the first thing to do is to seek understanding from God and apply His word for the situation. The psalmist writes” I am your servant; give me understanding, that I may know your testimonies” Psalms 119:125.
Determine before you are tested that the word of God is true and is a light unto your path. Satan’s strategy is to get us to doubt God with such trials and this is why you must have the word of God hidden in you. Remember once again that faith comes by hearing and hearing the word of God.
Be careful who you surround yourself with at this time because what you are hear will affect your faith. Stand firm and see the salvation of the Lord for He is faithful.
