Former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich seems to be making an attempt to redeem himself in the public eye – or at least score some cash and a new 15 minutes of fame. The ousted political pariah will be competing on the upcoming season of Donald Trump’s Celebrity Apprentice, according to The Associated Press.
Blagojevich will join 13 other celebrities to compete in Trump’s business world. The new season of Celebrity Apprentice will air on March 14 on NBC.
Blagojevich earned the public’s interest and disdain in November 2008 when he was arrested and charged with attempting to sell President Barack Obama’s Illinois Senate seat. Blagojevich has denied the charges and further legal action is still pending.
As an Illinois resident, I have to admit I am outraged to see this man once again receiving public interest, exposure and perhaps, admiration – especially on a reality television show like Celebrity Apprentice. My opinion is that he made my state a laughing stock (not that it wasn’t already) and he spat in the face of the trust Illinois voters placed in him. Blagojevich’s actions made a mockery of the office of Governor and I believe that choosing him to compete on a reality television show proves that television has sunk to a new low.
Perhaps Blago was chosen because Donald Trump admired his hair, perhaps he was chosen because his notoriety is expected to bring curious viewers who can’t resist the stench of corruption. Either way, I hope the former Illinois governor enjoys his taste of freedom and his little bit of television spotlight. If Lady Justice has any sense of what is right, Blagojevich will be watching television in a small cell sometime soon.
The other celebrities slated to compete for Trump’s favor on Celebrity Apprentice are: Well-known comedian-actor Sinbad, Australian television chef Curtis Stone, comedian-author Carol Leifer, actress Holly Robinson Peete, rock star Bret Michaels (who is certainly no newcomer to reality TV), pro wrestler-turned-actor Goldberg, baseball superstar Darryl Strawberry, Olympic sprint gold-medalist Michael Johnson, singer Cyndi Lauper, Victoria’s Secret model Selita Ebanks and rock star manager slash wife and TV personality Sharon Osbourne, round out the rest of the celebrity competitors.
It will be an interesting season for Celebrity Apprentice.
