I recently finished Queen of the Road by Doreen Orion for my first book club selection. I was intrigued by the idea of traveling for a year and spending that much time with one’s husband in such close quarters. Overall I enjoyed the book and it renewed my passion for traveling, if only I had the money to spend a year traveling across the country.
I enjoyed the writing style and what I would consider Doreen’s “sarcastic” voice. It was easy to read, entertaining, and moved quickly. This was definitely an easy read for me.
I was amused at all the things that can happen to one person in a year. (I know from my own personal experience that sometimes the truth IS stranger than fiction.) Its nice to see that Doreen and her “Project Nerd” persevered throughout all the trials and tribulations and were able to complete their year relatively unharmed.
Although they were physically unharmed or changed, the personal changes were interesting to see. A self-named princess (only later to be declared a queen) could survive with more modest (I sue the term loosely) accommodations and lifestyle. I too have come to a point in my life where I have downsized and I am rather enjoying it. I’m not traveling as much yet, but hope that more it will be in my future.
I believe that what began as a fun recount of their travels really became proof of their personal journey and growth. It is nice when we get something totally unexpected and it works out for the best. This is an interesting and fun little memoir/ recount of the travels and changes in the lives of two people. It is a great springboard for personal reflection. Check it out.
