With the passing of the first national holiday (New Year’s Day), the second is fast approaching (Martin L. King Jr. Day). The question then is how to best celebrate this holiday. This article will suggest some activities that the family can do to learn about this historical person and his legacy.
It has been a little less than 42 years since Dr. Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. been with us and as an iconic American figure bent on fighting for equality and justice for all Americans his memory and legacy should always stay fresh in our minds as much as the memory of the first Roman Catholic President (John F. Kennnedy) or the first African-American Mayor (Harold L. Washington) of what is called the most segregated city in the USA. This holiday celebrating the memory of Dr. Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. can be spent:
1. Learning who Dr. King was and what he means, not only the African-American Community but all the people of the United States of America.
2. Teach others about the legacy of Dr. Martin L. King Jr. and how they can carry on that legacy.
3. Contributing time and/or resources to continue the fight against social injustice here in America, America at war abroad, poverty.
This is what Martin Luther King Jr. cared about and in honouring him so shall we!
