If you are an organic product nut and love body products with a citrus kick then you have come to the right place. This piece will tell you how to make your own lemon lotion and how you can turn it into an amazing gift for that special aunt, sister or close friend.
Lemon is a citrus fruit that has been used for millennia as a lightening agent. Its acidic properties allow it to lighten skin that has darkened (for example, on the elbows and knees) and it makes a great natural bleach to create those “sun-streaked” highlights through the hair. Though one might think twice about putting it on the face because it does tend to irritate it, when used in conjunction with other ingredients it makes for an effective skin agent.
In order to make your own lotion there are five basic ingredients that make its base and to these you can add whatever flavoring or scent that you like. These five ingredients are:
Water Oil Emulsifier Thickener Preservative
In order for the water and oil to mix, the emulsifier is used. It keeps the oil and water from separating and makes a kind of suspension. Emulsifying wax and soy lecithin are the most common emulsifiers used. Shea butter is a good alternative for the oil.
Borax is a good preservative although you can also use baking soda. For thickeners, try using aloe vera gel or liquid glycerin.
To make lemon lotion, put 4 tablespoons of grated beeswax in a heated saucepan, while it is melting, add ½ cup coconut oil, 4 tablespoons of apricot kernel oil, ½ teaspoon lemon oil, ¼ teaspoon aloe vera gel. Mix until the wax dissolves. Then add 4 tablespoons of glycerin. Boil 4 tablespoons of water in another pan and then add 2 teaspoons borax powder. Mix until dissolved then add this mixture to the wax and oil mixture. Whisk and stir until a thick cream is formed. Store the finished cream in a jar. As an alternative, use lemon juice instead of the lemon oil, and apple cider vinegar instead of the glycerin.
Homemade body products make great gifts. Decorate a jar (jam jars, baby food jars) with a homemade label (something fun like At-Home Spa for Mom) and embellish the lid with sequins and rhinestones. Fill it with this lotion and present your pretty present from your own kitchen!
