Even after our teens, acne might suddenly erupt on our faces. One in five women between the ages of 25 and 40 suffer from adult onset acne. In our adult age, there is a myriad of things that might cause acne from stress, birth control pills, hormonal imbalance. This article will attempt to explain some causes of adult acne.

One of the major causes of adult acne is stress. In adult life, what with kids, jobs and other responsibilities stress levels reach their peak. This takes a major toll on physical and mental well being. Stress causes adrenaline levels to rise which put the body in a constant state of “fight or flight”. This adrenaline disrupts the natural order of the body and it is shows on the skin. To keep your skin from completely losing it, set aside some time for yourself everyday. Even ten minutes of uninterrupted “you” time is all your body needs to relax and take a breather. Read, do yoga or just close your eyes with a couple of cucumber slices. Shut of your phone and cell phone and play some soft music. You will see a marked improvement in your skin without any medication.

Another cause of adult acne, especially in women is the use of unwashed brushes and bad cosmetics. If you break out on your cheeks then your blush or powder brush is to blame. Unwashed brushes cause bacteria to be worked back in your pores and this blocks them. Blocked pores result in inflamed patches of acne. If your skin is especially sensitive, never share makeup with anyone and switch to mineral makeup which is gentler on the skin. Wash your brushes once a week with an anti-bacterial face wash. Some make up brands are even coming up with brush cleaning solutions o you can take your pick from these as well.

Hormonal imbalance also throws of the natural mechanism of your skin. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, menopause, the menstrual cycle also cause hormonal imbalance in women. Pregnant women will notice that during the first trimester their skin has gone crazy. The acne goes away in time but it might even stay till the breastfeeding period. During the menstrual cycle, progesterone levels rise and this causes the sebaceous glands to produce more oil which causes the skin to break out.

Now that you have some idea of what might be causing your acne, you will be able to take proper measures to treat it.
