Avatar, the latest masterpiece from James Cameroon has already reached the 47th slot on the international gross chart. Already known as the costliest and the ‘grandest’ of fantasy movies, avatar is making it huge on the box office. This high gross has come despite the new releases, Sherlock Holmes and Alvin and the chipmunks which made good starts themselves over the weekend.
Many critics may have called avatar a clichéd story, but it continues to dazzle audiences around the world. It is doing well in most countries and thus shows its global appeal. However, people are constantly comparing it to Cameroon’s last movie Titanic, which certainly had titanic success on the box office. The global gross of Titanic was 1800+ million dollars and as of now Avatar, has grossed 615 million and so there is still twice the distance left to cover if this movie has to overthrow its processor.
Avatar is the story of an ex-U.S. Marine, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), who was wounded and paralyzed from the waist down in combat on Earth. Jake is selected to participate in the Avatar program, which will enable him to walk. Pandora, a lush jungle filled with incredible life forms, some beautiful, many terrifying and with many precious resources, where he finally landed. Pandora is also home to the Na’vi, a sentient humanoid race. They are considered primitive, yet more capable than humans in each and every respect. They have glowing blue skin with tails. Na’vi are far away from any type of human mal-functioning and interference. They all live in harmony and maintain a pleasurable environment. After reaching there, humans start to take interest in different forms of life and valuable resources there.
As humans encroach deeper into Pandora’s forests, Na’vi start to counter them with their gigantic war abilities, to defend their threatened existence. Humans are not able to breathe in the environment of Pandora. But, in order to procure the resources, they create genetically-bred human-Na’vi hybrids known as Avatars. Jack is, unwittingly, also a part of this encroachment. On Pandora, through his Avatar body, Jake will be able to walk again along with soldiers. There he meets a young Na’vi female, Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña). He begins to fall in love with Neytiri. As a result, Jake finds himself caught between the military-industrial forces of Earth and the Na’vi. She aware him to choose either side in an epic battle that will decide the fate of Pandora and the Na’vi.
The story is made up of bits and pieces from several other fantasy and war movies, but the way it has been made makes its truly stand out.
