Finding the Best Websites for Backlinks

Adapted from my original article How to Find Good Sites for Backlinks

A central part of getting traffic is SEO ranking. SEO (which stands for search engine optimization) will ensure your article or webpage appears at the top of Google’s search results.  Lots of things go into obtaining a good SEO ranking,  and one of the most crucial components is backlinks (links to your article). What are the best sites for backlinks? This article will show you how to find the best sites for backlinks to help increase your SEO ranking.

Step 1. Compile a list of sites that enable you to submit links.  Facebook and Twitter are obvious examples, but you’re going to need to build a huge list. Are there forums you can post links in? What about social news sites? Social bookmarking sites are great as well.  The more you write down now, the better your SEO ranking will be when you’re finished.

Step 2. You need to check each site for the “no follow” tag.  No follow is the enemy of SEO ranking! Go to a page with a user submitted link and right click somewhere on the page. Select “View Source” to bring up the page’s source code.  First check to see if there’s a content=”nofollow” tag in the source’s head code (do a find search for it). Find the link in the code (try searching for the destination URL) and see if the link code includes: rel=”nofollow”.  If it does, cross this site off your list! Posting here won’t help your SEO ranking.

Step 3. SEO ranking is all about time – you need to make sure you’re posting links on sites that will raise your SEO ranking the most rather than wasting time on sites that only make a small difference.  You can do this by checking each site’s PageRank.  The PageRank tells you how important Google thinks the site is in effecting SEO ranking.  There are free PageRank checks all over the net. Just type a URL from you list into a rank checking site and it’ll give you a number from 1 to 10.  The higher the better! Prioritize your list, and don’t even bother keeping sites below with a PR lower than 4.

Step 4. Every time you publish something and want to boost your SEO ranking, you’ll want to submit a link to it at each of these sites.  It’s generally a good idea to go to each site and bookmark the submission page to make this process easier. The more time you can save submitting, the more sites you’ll be able to submit to.  Some social bookmarking sites even have javascript droplet bookmarks to automatically submit the page you’re browsing.

Additional Tips

There’s no master list of backlink sites.  Many sites decide to implement no-follow, so if you don’t know how to check a site you could wind up wasting a lot of time and not raising your SEO ranking at all.
