The business of collections is an ugly glimpse into how cruel the financial world can be to the average American.

I have worked in the dark disturbing world of collections for 6 months, all of which was hard time. Come to the office clean, leave dirty.

We hear about all the harassment that goes on in the industry, but the worst of it usually is verbalized to individuals that are innocent bystanders. Do you still feel like prostitution is the most unethical business in the United States? The recession has highlighted that this could not be untrue.

Collections often targets the family members, friends, co-workers and even neighbors of the debtor. For the most part, debtors do not answer the calls and letters in the mail; this is where a collector separates himself from the pack. In an industry driven by production where thousands a month can be earned in bonus money, the ethics are often left outside the building. A successful debt agent breaks the laws of collection so many times throughout the day it is hard to even keep track. An agent will target family, POE’s and neighbors of a debtor to build embarrassment up in their life. This has the effect of then making the debtor prioritize you in their life.

Ironically enough, when I worked in collections I found myself in collections for my own finances. I would not return the calls, and living the harassment was proof to me of how ruthless the business is widespread.

 I find it hard to explain what it is like to have relatives call you about debt you have that they have been called about. These practices are all illegal, but in a world where the average consumer does not know his rights, most is not reported. This makes “looking the other way” worth it for management of Debt Company’s. It is a business that works on amount of volume. The more people you call, the more people you will connect with and start the game.

“The Game”. The Game is defined as what an agent runs on a debtor’s account. The game is that person’s individualistic style and approach to cornering a suspect into paying his delinquent debt. One that is doubled, tripled and sometimes more of the original balance. A debt collector that makes decent money is one that judges his counterpart’s intelligent. It is about saying the most you can to instill fear in this person to where they want to pay right away. The debtor’s that do not return calls or try to appear as if a telephone line of any sort is not in their life are the ones that get hit the hardest. They are the ones who feel the wrath of family intrusion the most. The amount of information a debt agent has is down right scary.

I worked in an office with ex-cons, drug-dealers and just about every personality you could think of. I could get any drug I wanted at work, and whatever else people were selling on the work floor which seemed to be Ed Hardy clothing most days. In was a lot like a prison atmosphere; management wanted nothing to do with you and if a fight broke out they could not do anything. Your only hope was to get in with a set of people, keep your head down and make your phone calls. Verbal assaults were common in a working day. These are the people who have access to your social security numbers. If you are paying the company, then they have access to your debit card or checking account information as well. They know relatives names, addresses and past marriage information. Information that could be sold to other employees or even to outside individuals was scattered everyone in desks and on countertops throughout the 200-employee cage.

You would be amazed at how many people don’t speak a lick of English when your opening statement to them is that you are calling about an “important business matter”.

If you are in debt you can haggle with these companies. Get everything in writing. Pre-deal and post deal receipt. I have seen many people get told they are getting a settlement and the correct paperwork was not filled, thus, the other part of debt still circulated from debt company to company. The whole business if sneaky. Dent settlement company’s prey on debtors with no knowledge. When you hire one of these companies you are essentially paying them to do something you can do yourself.
