My Gratitude List

Gratitude – Appreciation or Thankfulness – a positive emotion or attitude in acknowledgment of a benefit that one has received or will receive.

Let’s think about that for a second. What do we have to be grateful for in our lives?

For me, there are so many things I have to be grateful for that I am not sure where to begin. I guess I should start from the beginning with my family.

I have the best mom and dad ever. After 42 years of marriage (and lots of issues) they still love each other and are each other’s best friends. I am grateful that I was able to grow up with two loving parents that showed their love to both my brother and I all through our lives. Even now, they are there for me when I need them. I hate asking for help but whenever I do, they are there to help me. I am grateful.

My brother is one of my confidants and friends. Although we had a shaky relationship in our young adult times, once we both became parents we learned how to work together and get along better. He is one of the funniest and smartest people that I know. He helps me with parenting, other advice and best of all with my humorous speeches. He has been holding me accountable for some things that I want to get done in my house. We text back and forth and discuss the process. Then he calls and makes me laugh.

My sister-in-law helps me with parenting and loves to banter with me. She asks me for advice sometimes and I ask her sometimes. She loves my brother and my nieces and she has a good heart and a quirky sense of humor. She also helps me with my speeches when my brother lets her talk.

My nieces make me laugh and keep me feeling young. They both talk my ears off and they remind me of me at that age. We talk about friendships and boys and all kinds of things. They respect me and look to me for advice and to confide in. I feel special when I am around them because they treat me special. I am the fun aunt.

My son is my greatest creation and my most proud accomplishment. I am so grateful to have a son that is so beautiful and smart. I am happy I can give him things that he wants and mostly things that he needs. We dance and sing together. We tickle and wrestle. We go out and have fun or we stay in and have fun. We watch different tv shows together and sometimes we just give each other space. He continually interrupts me when I am trying to write my speeches though. Even with that, he is the best thing that has ever happened to me and I have a lot of gratitude for that.

I have two beagles, Rex and Nina, and they give love unconditionally without judgment. I am grateful that I was able to adopt them and love them and have them love me. When my son is at his dad’s, they cuddle up with me and take naps or play.

I am an accountant. I was lucky enough to have parents to help pay for school to get my bachelor’s degree. I joined the Institute of Management Accountants in college and was lucky enough to have made friends that got me my first, second, third and fourth jobs (all construction accounting). I was grateful to get a change of pace from construction accounting to government accounting and in the meantime be able to be a mom, a wife and get my Masters Degree in Accounting and Financial Management. I have a good job that challenges me and helps me pay my bills.

I have a home and a car. I pay a lot of money but I am able to sustain the payments on my house and my car. One day, I will downsize to a smaller house and a cheaper car, but in the meantime I am able to make the payments and keep everything. With the economy the way it is, I am grateful to have these things.

I love to have fun. I am grateful that there are so many things I find fun to do. I love to paint and draw, cook, dance, sing, listen to music. I go out with friends and have fun at bars and clubs. I go out with my son and go to the movies or bowling. I go out with my nieces for dinner and/or a movie. Sometimes I swim at my parents house with the kids and the adults too. There are so many fun things to do, I keep finding new things and learning more about what I like to do.

I make a lot of mistakes and learn a lot of lessons. I am grateful for these mistakes because without them I would never be able to change and grow. I make mistakes with everything that I do, but hopefully with most of the mistakes I make, I learn from them. There is a story of a person that walks down the same street every day and encounters a hole. They fall in it each day pausing a little before it a little longer as each day passes. Eventually they think about going around it and then one day they actually walk around the hole. The next day the walk by the curb and eventually walk across the street. When the lesson is learned, they take a different route. Sometimes we have to fall in the hole a few extra times before we decide to take a different route. Without the mistakes, how will we learn?

I love LOVE. To feel in love. To feel passion and desire. I am grateful that I have felt these feelings, whether in the past, present or future. I am grateful that I can feel this way. There is a euphoric feeling when you feel love. There is a sense of belonging, purpose and completeness. I hope one day to find this kind of love with a man.

Toastmasters – I am grateful that I have found this club. Writing speeches is therapy for me and speaking them is my theater. Without this, I wouldn’t feel like I have a purpose to write and share. I find that I enjoy writing and speaking. I have been publishing my speeches too. It has awakened a sense of purpose in me that I am grateful for.

Gratitude – Appreciation and Thankfulness – a positive emotion – What are you grateful for?
