Your credit report is something that will hang over your head for your whole life.  This is something that you will want to monitor to ensure that you will be able to obtain credit in the future.  Sometimes there are blemishes or even mistakes that will need to be cleared off of your credit report.

You are entitled to a free copy of your credit report once a year.  It is recommended that you check your credit once a year to make sure that everything is correct and just to stay on top of your finances.  Don’t check your report more frequently than that because a lot of inquiries can actually damage your score.

Check your credit report for any errors you may want.  It is important that you get any errors on your credit report corrected so that it does not ruin your score.  It can be a lot of work getting errors fixed, but it is well worth it in the long run.  There is a very simple process for getting this fixed.

The first thing that you will need to do is to write a letter to the credit reporting agency about the mistake.  Any documentation you have to prove the error will help the decision go much quicker.  They usually will respond to your request within 30 days, and they will mail you a copy of your credit report if there was any changes made.

You will also want to notify the creditor of the error, just like you notified the credit reporting agency.  This can be done the exact same way, buy writing a letter to them and including the appropriate documentation to show the error.  Make sure you do not send the originals, and keep records of everything that you are sending to them.

If you do not have any errors on your credit report, take a look at the debt you have.  If you have many credit cards and some do not have any balances on them, consider closing a couple.  These could potentially go against you the next time you apply for a line of credit.

Level out the balances on your credit cards.  If one card is almost at the limit, consider either paying it down or transferring the balance.  You want to show that you do not have all of your credit cards max out.  If you have really high limits that you never come close to, ask if you can have them lowered.

There are a lot of ways that you can clean up your credit.  You need to stay on top of your credit report so that you can keep up on your financial future.
