How to View The Sabbath

In the Bible God said that he had made the Sabbath for man. Some people view the Sabbath like this:”Oh great, it’s Sabbath again. I guess I can’t.” People think of the Sabbath as a day when they can’t do this and can’t do that. But the Sabbath is a privilege. A special day when you can take off from all of your work and other daily affairs. You see, on Tuesday you have to go to work, you have to go shopping, you have to go to a birthday party, or whatever else is on your schedule. However, on Sabbath you don’t have to do any of that; you just spend time drawing closer to God, gain wisdom for life from his word, and bless others by sharing God’s saving truth with them.

What did it mean for God to rest on the Sabbath? Some think that he relaxed because he was tired from all his work. But does God get tired? No, he is the almighty God- how can he get tired? When God rested that meant that he enjoyed all that he had done in the previous six days. So the Sabbath is a day when you can sit back and enjoy what you have done and what God has done for you. Remember, he told his chosen people that the Sabbath is a sign that “I AM the Lord that doeth sanctify you” (Exodus 31:17c). In essence, the Sabbath is a sign of our salvation by resting in the works of God for us and not the works that you try to do to earn your salvation. Adam and Eve rested on the Sabbath with God in His works of creation which was of none of their works at all. He did the work and they rested in it. You keep the Sabbath as a sign that it is He who sanctifies us and not us ourselves. In case anyone says that we are not Jews so the Sabbath isn’t for us, Romans 11:17 should clear that up. It states, “And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wast grafted in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree.” You can read the verses that surround it yourself to get the context further but it is telling us that believing Gentiles were grafted into the good root which is Christ in the place of the Jews who didn’t believe. You get to have what he wanted any and all of His chosen people to have including the institutions that were given for the benefit of man such as the Sabbath.

Should you buy and sell on the Sabbath? In the Bible the prophet Jeremiah said that the Jews should stop trading with other nations on the Sabbath. He enforced it and God blessed him. God provided the “Preparation Day” for us to plan ahead and make the preparations necessary to have all these worldly affairs behind us. You should prepare your self as much as possible. It is all a matter of our intentions. Did you try your best to prepare ahead but just couldn’t make it? Are you doing our very best to set aside time for God as we would a distinguished guest? You have to be honest with yourselve and do all you can to plan ahead. But suppose you are in the mood for pizza and the only thing you have are beans. It would not be right because if you bought some pizza from the store then you are giving them money for going to work on Sabbath. But suppose you have nothing and you are hungry through no fault of your own? Then it would be okay because God doesn’t want you to go hungry on Sabbath because then it would not be an enjoyable day.

So you see, the Sabbath is a privilege and not a day of can’t-dos but truly a day of can-dos.
