Keep each ride smooth. This means you shouldn’t accelerate too fast too quickly or brake too hard at once. When you see that a red light is coming up, let go of the brake early and cruise (meaning don’t press the brake or the gas). As you get closer to the red light, slowly and constantly press on the brakes. If you do this, you’ll have a much smoother ride and save money.
If you are looking into buying a car, consider buying a hybrid. The market for hybrids is getting bigger and not all of them are extremely expensive. Most are moderately affordable. The Toyota Prius starts at 22,000 and has 51/48 est mpg. The Honda Insight starts at 19,800 and has 40/43 est mpg. Also consider buying a car with manual transmission.
Whenever possible, turn off the air conditioning. The air conditioning uses up a lot of your gas and turning it off will help you save gas. Instead of using the a/c, roll down your windows. If you live in a hot climate, consider turning off the air conditioning 5 minutes before you get to your destination. You’ll still save a little bit after every trip.
If you have a car that’s less than 10 years old, you don’t need to warm up the engine for too long. Even ten or fifteen is too long. Two or three minutes is sufficient.
Make sure your tires have enough air inside. If your tires aren’t properly inflated and don’t have enough air pressure, it will be harder to move. If it’s harder to move, your car will end up using more gas.
Clean the inside of your car and make sure you don’t have any unnecessary weight. Don’t leave heavy boxes or bags in your trunk. A heavy car takes more gas to move.
Consider changing your route. Even if it’s shorter, it might won’t be more fuel efficient if there are lots of traffic lights or a lot of stopping and going. You won’t save gas if you have to stop and go constantly. Find a route that has less stoplights and less traffic.
Drive less. Whenever possible, walk. Also consider carpooling. Try to get everything done at once. If you have to go to the end of town, make sure you get everything you can done so you don’t have to go back and forth.
