Not many Arsenal fans will have heard of the young Osasuna defender Cesar Azpilicueta, but it seems today that Arsenal have been showing an interest in the 20 year-old Spaniard.
Arsene Wenger has made no secret of the fact that he is looking for some strong value players to bolster his defence, but has discounted the need to buy any more strikers. The Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh has been reported to be very close to a move to Arsenal, but Wenger has even discounted that possibility now that Eduardo Da Silva and Carlos Vela have now recovered from their injuries and have rejoined the squad.
Although largely unknown outside of his home country, Azpilicueta has shown a lot of promise for his tender years. He has already made 70 appearances for the Primera League club, after coming through the youth ranks, and he made his debut back in 2007, when he was just 18, in a 2-0 defeat by Real Madrid.
Last season he only missed two games for Osasuna in the whole season.
He has also gained recognition at international level, having played for Spain at all levels from the U17 upwards, presently having nine U21 caps. He is tipped to become an established first team player in the future.
Although this bit of Arsenal transfer gossip comes from the Sun, it could have a thread of truth as it carries a quote from the player himself.
Azpilicueta said: “I know of rumours linking me with Arsenal but I have yet to speak with anybody from the club.
“At the moment, I can only concentrate on working with Osasuna and progressing my football.”
So if the rumours of a £2m bid are true, then that would seem very cheap for such a promising player, and perhaps Wenger should snap him up if he can get him for that price!
