The Night watchman (Hans Georg Baumgartner) takes you around the walled medieval town of Rothenberg pointing out interesting buildings, throwing in snippets of history and comic relief. It is all in the presentation! The tour takes an hour, and most of that time you will spend smiling as the Night Watchman doesn’t miss a beat with his quirky sense of humor. He makes jokes about himself and his job, both in character as the Watchman and as this modern innovative businessman.
Joking a side you will learn a lot about the city including details that you won’t find in any guide books.
The guide has a deep voice and is tall; he wears a cloak and carries an old lantern and spear like weapon. I won’t ruin the thrill by giving away any of his puns, but it is enjoyable and I found myself laughing a good deal of the time. Rothenberg in itself is exquisite, and very well preserved, if over populated with tourists, but the trick as with any touristy site, is to go out of season. The Watchman is alas a shroud business man and sells discs and guide books based on his tour.
The tour goes past a pub on its way called “Hell”, and if you are still in the mood for a night out at the end of the tour why not “go to Hell” and have a few drinks!
