Popeye and Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges at Universal’s Islands of Adventure

Popeye and Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges is the third water ride in Universal’s Islands of Adventure theme park at Universal Orlando Resort, aside from Jurassic Park River Adventure and Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls. Neighboring right across from Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls in the Toon Lagoon section of Universal’s Islands of Adventure, Popeye and Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges separates itself from the two of them by taking the identity of a river rafting ride, much like the Congo Rapids water ride in Six Flags Great Adventure.

Just like Six Flags Great Adventure’s Congo Rapids, you along with a group of riders are gathered into a large circular raft (which comes complete with a protective container in the center for all of your belongings like shoes, cameras, etc. which does a good job of protecting it from what’s to come) and are sent off down a river where you encounter splash-filled waterfalls, rapid waters, among other aquatic hazards. It all begins as a calm river rafting ride up until the evil Bluto switches the sign on the river and sends the raft down the wrong route (much like Jurassic Park River Adventure) where all the rapids are waiting.

The raft you’re on plunges into the wild rapid waters which occasionally gets drenched under spilling water that is so intense that it completely soaks all of the riders. A quick note about the raft: It was specially built to allow flowing water into it so that it can soak the riders but it empties (or bilges it out rather, hence the title of the ride Popeye and Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges) before…
