Health education is the principle by which people learn to conduct themselves in a manner that will promote, maintain or restore health. It is designed to improve health literacy based on combined learning experiences and theories that will enable learners to acquire the proper knowledge and skills to make quality health decisions. So it has been determined that in order for health education to be effective it must be taught by qualified health teachers.

Becoming a health teacher requires certain qualifications that can be divided into two sectors which are professional attainments and the physical attainment. Professional attainment gives the teacher power to present knowledge in relation to its principles and application. The teacher should also understand how to relate with the mind of the learner. Physical attainment, on the other hand, promotes visual learning to the students giving a sense of high regard and trust that the teacher truly is highly qualified.

There are colleges and universities that offer bachelors and masters degrees in health teacher education, either through the department of education or the health science department. Choosing science-related courses which focuses on human development and biology. These courses proved to be beneficial in providing firm foundation in relation to health teaching. Related learning experiences through internship programs or practicums will help an aspiring health teacher to apply learned theories and hone their teaching skills. Interaction with actual students will give way to the development of a teacher’s own style and innovations in providing quality education. It usually takes four years to attain a bachelor’s degree. Applying and passing for a teaching license is the next crucial step of being a qualified health teacher. A teaching certification is one of the required documents when applying for a job especially in public schools. The State Board of Education provides detailed requirements for the licensure examination.

Universities and lyceums serves as institutions of learning. These are places where people hone their skills and eventually achieve their dreams in the future. Teachers and professors instill in their students knowledge as well as essential values and good health that they will need as they venture to the world outside the four corners of the classroom. Thus it is vital to ensure that the mentors themselves should achieve and posses the proper qualifications needed in their fields.
