Do you ever wake up during the night randomly and don’t know why? You’re not alone, more than 40 million or 1 in 6 Americans have sleeping disorders. The most common sleeping disorders are Insomnia, sleepwalking, and bruxism. The most common causes of sleeping disorders are anxiety, back pain, and withdrawal. Sleeping disorders can dramatically affect a person’s life. For example, lack of sleep may cause you to not be focused at work and at school which could result in you being fired or your grades dropping.

Insomnia is a common sleeping disorder. Insomnia occurs when you have difficulty falling asleep. Insomnia is hereditary. The cause of insomnia could be a lack of quality or quantity of sleep, jet lag, withdrawal from a drug or excessive unpleasant noises. Around 30- 50% of the general population are affected by insomnia. Insomnia affects all age groups. Insomnia is more common in adult woman than men. Insomnia can cause you to have little energy, poor motor skills and can cause you to have difficulty with your memory.  Insomnia can lead to many issues, Such as, falling asleep while driving or passing out. You should visit your doctor if the symptoms last for more than 3-4 weeks.

Sleepwalking is one of the most well known sleeping disorders. Sleepwalking is hereditary. Fever, stress, alcohol intoxication and sleep deprivation can cause you to sleepwalk. Sleepwalking occurs when you perform tasks in your sleep which you would normally do while awake. Sleepwalking can affect people of any age. However, children sleep walk more often than adults. Sleepwalkers are a danger to themselves and others. For instance, if you fell downstairs. There are several ways to prevent sleep walking. For instance, performing meditation exercises, limiting stress, and sleeping for longer periods of time.

Bruxism is the most common sleeping disorder. Bruxism occurs when you grind or clench your teeth. Bruxism is hereditary. Bruxism eventually causes your teeth to become shorter and blunt. The symptoms are: Jaw pain, morning migraines, facial muscle and nerve pain, and stress or tension. The only way to prevent damage to your teeth is to buy a $200 mouth guard.

Anxiety is the general feeling of worry. Some people suffer from anxiety and it causes them to lose sleep. Anxiety can be hereditary. Anxiety is popular among younger children. For instance, many children believe there are monsters under their beds or in their closets; this is a form of anxiety which leads to loss of sleep. Some common causes for anxiety are stress at school, work, in relationships, as well as, financial difficulties and side effects from medication. Adults usually have anxiety relating to their day to day lives. Symptoms of anxiety are: sweating, trembling, chest pain, dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath, chills or hot flashes and numbness or tingling. There are several ways to prevent anxiety, these are: Meditation, exercise, and by avoiding the use of caffeine, stimulants and prescription medication.

Back Pain is a common cause of sleeping disorders. Back pain is hereditary. 9 out of 10 adults experience back pain sometime in their life. Your back pain could be caused by your bed. If you wake up in the morning with a sore back this is most likely your problem. One of the cheapest and easiest ways to combat back pain is to do abdominal crunches, by doing so you strengthen your abdominal muscles which may decrease the chances of suffering from back pain.

Withdrawal is often caused when trying to give up an addiction. The most common addictions are alcohol and cigarettes. When someone tries to quit smoking their body begins to crave the nicotine. The most common symptoms for withdrawal are sweating, vomiting, anxiety, insomnia, and muscle pain. A cure for nicotine addiction is to use the patch, which gives small doses of nicotine to the body. This allows the body to slowly lose the craving. This form of treatment is one of the most common choices for patients.

Sleeping disorders can shorten your life span and affect your daily life. If you think that you may have a sleeping disorder you should contact your family doctor and inform them of your symptoms.  Always remember that sleep is one of the most important things in your daily life. Without sleep your body would not function properly.  It is important for young people especially students to get enough sleep because their bodies are developing and they need to give their full attention to their teachers in order to succeed in school.
