A resurgent India played against a confident Sri Lanka in the last league match for both the teams in the Compaq Cup. Though this match had no academic interest as both the teams have already qualified for the finals to be played on the 14th of September. Indians, however, made a mess of a good bowling display to allow Sri Lanka score more than 300 runs when once they were around the 180 run mark with half the wickets down.
It was Sanath Jayasuriya and Kandamby who were the two standout performers for the Islanders. Jayasuriya was as usual in his destructive best and did not feel any letup during his innings. The fall of wickets did not deter him from his batting efforts. He kept playing confidently and kept the scoreboard moving irrespective of what was happening at the other end of the wickets.
The new batting face in the Sri Lankan cricket, Kandamby too was focusing on dislodging the Indian bowling attack. Both of them exceptionally well even if it was their home conditions. At one stage when Sri Lanka was staring at only about 250 runs, which seemed out of the reach, the hard-hitting due ensured that India had a more difficult target to chase down. Sri Lanka posted a 300+ score at the end of their innings.
The famed Indian batting line-up was surely going to be tested this time around. If the likes of Sachin, Dravid, Yuvraj Singh and M S Dhoni click, on target is ever unchaseable. But that was not to be on this day. The Indian batting could hardly ever trouble the Sri Lankan bowling attack.
