Where Shall I Put The Couch?

A good furniture arrangement can improve a poorly designed room, emphasize a good one, and create an interesting, often beautiful, focal point.

The room’s purpose should guide your planning (or purposes, as the case may be). For example, a den or recreation room can also be used as a home office, so potential furnishings should be thought out carefully to achieve the best usage of space.

Now what is the room’s focal point? Is there a fireplace in it, an unusual painting or artwork? Does the floor or carpet have an unusual design? Build your furniture arrangements around this point. If there’s no focal point, make the furniture grouping itself the focus.

Planning a nice arrangement requires a good eye for judging scale, balance, size, and shape.

Scale is the proposition of one object in relation to its surroundings; the furnishings and room size should be related. The people who’ll be using the furnishings should also be considered. (For another example, a small room will appear larger if small furniture’s used, pieces that can be seen through as well as under and using light colors on the walls.)

There are two types of balance: asymmetrical (informal) and symmetrical (formal). Symmetrical balance is reached when one side of a room is repeated on the other to achieve an even mirror image. Asymmetrical is reached when equal but totally different furnishings are balanced on each side of a focal point.

Most rooms in a home or apartment are not perfectly proportioned; some careful arranging and a good imagination can fix this.

A large or long room can be “shortened” by putting a large vertical furniture piece, a bright color, a bold pattern, or anything eye-catching on the short wall that’s farthest from the distance.

Placing a table, couch, pair of chairs, or a desk at right angles to one of the long walls will divide the room into “sections” and also help shorten it.

The most important aspects of furniture arranging are comfort and convenience. Here are a few tips:

  • 1. Always arrange your

  • 2. Arrange seating so that conversations can be easily held(Chairs should be no more than 8 feet apart).
  • 3. Check table heights regarding the use of lamps;

  • tables should be no higher than the sofa cushions.
  • 4. Allow 14-18 inches of space between the

Outlets are a little higher price-wise, but you’ll still get a bargain. These stores often have new AND slightly used furniture. Dollar stores may just carry some light furnishings, but aloo may have outlets or
