Many years ago anciet man believed that hell was under the ground, in the center of the earth, where it was hot. This of course was based on the incorrect notion that the earth was the center of the universe.
When science proved that the sun ws the center of our solar system, what happened to hell? The Bible and Sacred Tradition never defined the exact location of hell. God created hell as a place to keep the devil and all the angels who rebelled with him, and because angels are pure spirit and have no earthly bodies which take up space, then hell really isn’t a physical place. But it is as real as heaven or purgatory, but you can’t travel to it anymore than a spaceship can reach heaven.
The essence of hell isn’t a million degrees of heat from fire but the heat that comes from hatred and bitterness. It’s a lonely place and a selfish place, where no matter who or how many souls it contains, no one cares about anyone else except for themselves.
It’s complete solation as well as eternal torment. This is why everyone should want to avoid hell at all cost.
Heaven on the other hand, is a spiritual place of great happiness and joy. This is where everyone knows and love each other but most of all because this is where the soul finally sees God face to face for eternity
Being in the presence of the Supreme Being who is all truth, all love, and all goodness should be the desire of everyone.
