Reflexology is a form of alternative medicine involving the method of massaging, pushing or pressing firmly certain parts of the feet, or sometimes the hands and ears, with the aim of producing a beneficial effect on other parts of the body, or to improve general health and vitality.
Reflexology is more of a science based on the principle that there are energy zones and reflex points in the feet corresponding to every part of the body and by applying thumb pressure to specific points on the feet and stimulating it gently, the congested and blocked areas are removed restoring balance from within.
One of the methods known as the Ingham method of Reflexology is used primarily for relaxing tension. Doctors agree that majority of our health problems can be linked to nervous stress and tension.
It is not necessary to obtain a formal training to practice reflexology and call oneself a reflexologist as this system of medicine is not approved by law. However, some nurses and massage therapists offer reflexology as part of their licensed practice. Some courses are accredited for continuing education for nurses and massage therapists.
The positive effects of reflexology are similar both on children and adults. Some advocates go further and claim it is more effective. Advocates have also propounded that reflexology can also help children create an awareness of one’s own self. Majority of the health professionals and scientists consider reflexology to be a pseudoscience and claim there are no authentic scientific studies proving its effectiveness as a medical treatment, or that there is any form of link between specific areas of the feet and the various organs of the body.
Reflexology offers a large number of benefits as it treats the body as an entire connected organism, rather than merely concentrating on a specific symptom. By applying pressure on particular points in the foot, hand or ear, the supply of blood as well as the functioning of the nervous system can be improved. Along with this, the body also receives a natural flow of energy which in turn improves its overall condition. It also reduces physical and emotional stress and tension. Although we do not claim it to be a miracle healing therapy, reflexology can help in maintaining the body’s natural balance and removes unnecessary blockages. It is thought to be beneficial for a wide variety of complaints from digestive disorders to the disorders of the nervous system and even insomnia.
Reflexology can offer beneficial results; a uniting theme is the idea that, areas on the foot correspond to areas of the body, and that by gently massaging or pressing these points one can improve health to the best. Concerns have been raised by health professionals that treating potentially serious illnesses with reflexology, which has no proven efficacy, could delay in seeking the appropriate medical treatment.
Although reflexology is not used to diagnose or treat health disorders, a large number of people around the globe use it as a complementary medicine along with other systems of medicine to treat and cure various disorders.
