As I mentioned in my summary, I took French in grade school and then followed up with many more years of the language in high school. So why did I forget so much and is there an easier way to learn a new language on your own? Here are a few ways I found that helped me retain a lot more vocabulary.
1. First of all, I would highly recommend learning a new language in a group setting. I’m not talking about attending classes. I’m thinking about learning the language with your family. Everyone can learn together.
2. Head off to the bookstore and find a book that teaches the language to children. It will be a lot easier and a lot less technical.
3. You might also want to concentrate on one room at a time. Lets begin with the kitchen for example. Put sticky notes on items naming the particular item in the language of choice. Whenever you come into the kitchen refer to the item with it’s “new” name. It won’t be long before everyone catches on.
4. Work the word into the conversation until it becomes second nature. For example, during dinner ask for the butter to be passed to you, but ask for the butter to be passed using the word for butter in the language that you are trying to learn. At this point you are building up vocabulary.
If you think about it, that’s exactly how children learn from the time they learn to speak and once you have mastered that, short sentences will follow. It’s all about baby steps.
