Difficulty: Moderately Challenging Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Comb
  • Hair Foil
  • Bleach or Desired colored dye
  • Developer
  • Mixing bowl
  • Hair paint brush (for dye application)
  • Hair Clips (To hold hair in place and eliminate the possibility of spotting)
  1. Step 1

To begin, make sure that you have all of the necessary materials. All of the products that you need can be found at a beauty supply store. The first thing you will need to do is mix the color. When mixing color and developer, mix equal parts to obtain the perfect solution. Mix the solution thoroughly until its texture is moderately thick, but easy to stir.

  2. Step 2

Start by sectioning your hair off into four sections: The top, left side, right side and back.

  3. Step 3

There are a ton of techniques for foiling hair, but the most common is weaving. Work your way from the back to the front. First, part off a small section of hair. ( I usually start with one of the side sections because they take more time to process). Next, weave the tail of your pick comb in and out of the hair in a horizontal direction. Separating both thin and thick pieces of hair will create a more natural and less chunky look.

  4. Step 4

After you have separated the hair that you want to dye, take a piece of foil and hold it tightly to your scalp underneath the pieces of hair that you want to dye. Using your hair paint brush, paint the dye onto the foil so that it covers the hair completely.

  5. Step 5

Next, fold the foil up from the bottom and inwards on both the right and left side to ensure that no dye will leak out onto your other hair.

  6. Step 6

Next, move to the next section and repeat steps 3-5 until you have foiled all of the hair that you wish to dye.

  7. Step 7

After you have finished foiling, let your hair process. Times vary depending on what type of dye you are using, so read the packaging thoroughly.

  8. Step 8

Check inside each foil every 8-10 minutes to make sure that the color is how you want it.

  9. Step 9

After hair is done processing, remove each foil, beginning with the first ones that you put in and ending with the last. Wash hair thoroughly to remove all of the dye. Use an immense amount of conditioner because hair dye is extremely moisture draining.

  10. Step 10

Dry hair and enjoy! See, it wasn’t as hard as you thought =)
