Restless Leg Syndrome is a condition which affects the muscles and/or nerves in the legs. It is described most often by those afflicted as a ‘crawly feeling’. This is a sensation which cannot be ignored. Your legs suddenly have a mind of their own. They INSIST on moving. In milder cases, the individual can move the legs on their own and gain a bit of relief. In move extreme cases, the legs move themselves. Some cases are so extreme that the legs thrash about in the bed at night of their own accord lending to more serious issues related to sleep deprivation. The cause of Restless Leg Syndrome is still unknown as is why it tends to manifest itself in the evenings or at bedtime. Drugs are available for use to combat the symptoms of RLS. The lesser afflicted sometimes choose to just deal with the condition rather than the narcotics. If you are one of the lesser afflicted, here are some ways to deal with RLS.
First, move your legs. Many people suggest that RLS begins when they finally sit down in the evening to settle and watch some TV or read. Give your legs what they want, movement. Stand up to watch TV. Rock gently while standing. Sit occasionally, stand when necessary.
Stand when socializing. Just be honest. Tell the folks sitting around your living room or the co-workers drinking a latte’ with you at Starbucks that you have RLS and need to stand. They’ll understand.
Avoiding alcohol, Tylenol and ibuprofen seem to help. These substances, for unknown reasons, aggravate the RLS condition.
If your RLS is extreme and keeps you and your spouse awake at night, you may need medication. Otherwise, sleeping with a pillow between your knees may give your legs the relief that they seek
