How to Change the Oil in Your Car or Truck

Things You’ll Need:

  • oil
  • oil filter
  • ramps
  • bucket for old oil
  • filter wrench for oil filter
  • socket wrench or wrench for oil plug
  1. Step 1oil_Thumb.jpg find out what kind and how much oil is required for your vehicle

    first, find out how much oil and what kind of oil filter your vehicle requires.

    next, place car ramps, to pull the car up onto, on a flat and level surface. then, slowly pull your vehicle up onto the ramps until you are at the top and then stop, put the car in park, apply the parking brake and turn the vehicle off.

    exit the vehicle and place the oil filter, filter wrench, and socket wrench for the oil plug where you will be working under the vehicle.

    under the vehicle, locate the oil pan. the oil pan will be towards the front of the vehicle, under the motor and will have a single bolt in the bottom.

  5. Step 5oilbucket_Thumb.jpg place bucket to catch oil under the oil pan and remove the oil plug

    place your bucket to catch the oil in, under the oil plug. then remove the oil plug so the oil can drain from the motor.

    when the oil is drained from the motor, locate the oil filter. this is usually above or near the oil pan. the filter will be round and usually has a black non slip coating to grip with at the end of it.

    once you have located the oil filter, place your filter wrench around it and remove it. be sure and have your bucket under it because there will probably be some oil dripping.

  8. Step 8

    after you have removed the oil plug and filter and both have drained completely, screw the new oil filter back on where you took the old one from and put the oil plug back in the oil pan. tighten both.

  9. Step 9

    once both the oil filter and oil plug are back in place and are tight, remove any and all tools, including the bucket of used oil from under the vehicle.

    next, under your hood, locate the oil cap. this is usually on top of the motor and is labeled oil. remove the cap and add the appropriate amount of oil back to the motor.

  11. Step 11

    finally, replace the oil cap and tighten. shut the hood of the vehicle and remove the vehicle from the ramps. that’s all there is to it. you have just changed the oil and oil filter in your vehicle.
