How to take care of one’s skin

Hundreds of skin care products are now in the market and most of us may be confused on which to choose. Taking care of one’s skin does not need to be time-consuming, expensive and complicated. In the desire for clear and flawless skin, people tend to choose the wrong type of products and end up paying for stuff that they don’t really use. Here are some basic ways on how to take care of one’s skin.

Know your skin type

Knowing one’s skin type is the first step. Skin care products usually have labels to which skin type they are appropriate. You may have dry skin if your skin is flaky in appearance and itches a lot. If your skin is very shiny and you often use oil blots tissues, then you can have oily skin. Some lucky people have normal skin, where their skin looks fresh all day under normal conditions.

The Five Commandments

The five commandments to basic skin care are cleansing, exfoliate, tone, moisturize and protect.

A cleanser should be used to remove make-up and surface dirt that one gets with everyday.  It is recommended to wash the face twice a day, morning and evening. Cleansing more than twice a day may trigger sebum production and will most likely cause pimples.

Exfoliation means to remove dead skin cells as the skin regenerates every day. Those in the surface are the dead skin cells and will most likely give you a dull appearance. If you plan to exfoliate every day, choose a mild product that is suitable for use daily. Buildup of dead skin cells in the surface may also lessen the effectiveness of other skin care products.

Toners are used to maintain the pH balance in the skin. They condition the pores and also remove impurities that cleansers miss when you washed your face.

The skin as an organ also needs hydration. In fact, it is the largest organ in the body. All skin types need to use a moisturizer to make it appear soft and supple. Even the oily types need to moisturize. Choosing the right moisturizer is also important. A good moisturizer should leave your face soft and smooth, not greasy.

The last step is to protect through the use of sunscreen.  Skin on the face and hands tend to age quickly than other body parts since they are always exposed to the sun’s harmful rays.  A lotion with SPF 15 or 30 is safe for daily use.

Ask for Samples

Before deciding to buy a skin care products, ask for samples from the beauty counters first. Most brands will offer samples to customers so they can try it out first and see if the product is compatible with their skin type. Try them on the inside part of your elbow or behind the ear first. Through thus, if you get a rash, it won’t be very obvious.

Get enough sleep

Have you ever heard of beauty sleep? Sleeping is the body’s way of recharging and it is good for the skin. Have you noticed that when you have enough sleep the night before, your skin glows?

Eat the right food and drink enough water

Water flushes out the toxins in the body and in the process, will make your skin look smooth, supple and clear. Foods like fruits and vegetables are also rich in vitamins and minerals that will help the skin look better.

Avoid the sun between 9AM-4PM

As discussed earlier, the sun’s rays can accelerate skin aging and may result to wrinkles sagging. If one really needs to go out around the mentioned times, it is important to apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going out.
