Is freelance writing perfect for you? That really is a hard question to answer because of the simple fact that everybody is different. Keep in mind that freelancing is a whole kind of business by itself and that if you decide to go at it full-time, be ready for the business side of things. Because not everyday is just about writing.
1. Test the waters first.
If you currently have a day job, don’t leave it just yet. Try your hand on freelance writing by first accepting some sideline writing jobs from your friends and colleagues. You can also post some ads telling people that you are open for freelance jobs.
2. Learn some new skills.
Freelance writing is not just all about writing. It also requires a lot of other skills especially if you are a one-man team. For example, do you know anything about accounting? If you are going to start a business, you need to learn at least the basics of accounting to help you manage your finances. You might also want to learn search engine optimization especially if you see yourself accepting SEO writing jobs.
3. Learn new writing skills.
Are you planning to focus on one niche? Perhaps you only want to write white papers. But what if you want to dabble into writing sales letters, web content, SEO articles, or press releases and you have no experience in these fields? You must study the basics and advanced approaches on these styles of writings by either enroling in a writing class or buying writing books. In short, expand your knowledge and skills to also expand your market.
4. Setup your own home office.
Most writers can only write comfortably in a room or area that is quiet and free from any other disturbances. So if you are going into freelance writing, assign one room in your house as your home office. Close the door when you are writing and place a ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign to let others know that you are busy at work.
5. Put up a war fund.
A war fund is just a way of calling your personal savings. You probably already know that it is not easy to get started and to attract a good number of clients in your first few months of freelancing. Since this is the case, it is best that you set aside some cash to help sustain your daily basic needs until you start to earn really well in your writing business.
