Do you want to keep your energy bil down this summer by using your air conditioner less? A ceiling fan can really make a difference in keeping your home cool without having to turn on the air conditioner or circulating cool air so that you can use your air conditioner less. There is one little trick you need to know to make this work. You have to set your fan so that it is rotating in the correct direction for the season. During the summer, it needs to rotate counterclockwise or left and in the winter it needs to rotate clockwise or right. In the winter, it should push the warm air down, whereas in the summer, it pulls the air up and forces the warm air away and down the sides of the room.

Things You’ll Need:

  • a stool or chair to reach your fan.  Make sure it is sturdy and you have someone to support it so you don’t fall.
  1. Step 1

Get out a chair or a stool so that you can reach your ceiling fan.

  2. Step 2

Locate the switch to change the direction of the blades. This is usually on the middle section just below the blades and above the lighting.

  3. Step 3

Switch it to the counterclockwise direction for the summer season.

  4. Step 4

Get down and enjoy the benefits of a fan that is working efficiently to cool your home and lower your energy bill.  You will know if you did it right by standing below the fan when it is turned on.  In the summer, you should feel the air circulating down to you directly.  It will feel windy.  In the winter, you should not feel the direct force of the air.
