Tinnitus is one of those conditions that many of us consider to be rare but almost everybody experiences it at some time in their life. Even those people who say that they do not have any ringing in their ears at all will experience a certain level of ringing whenever they are put in a sound sealed room. In fact, in a test of several dozen college students, this very fact was proven. One of the more effective ways of treating tinnitus with a pharmaceutical drug is by taking Elavil. Here is a little bit of information about the possibilities of using this drug and what it can do for you.

First of all, Elavil is not a prescription medication that was made specifically for tinnitus. It is an antidepressant medication that is typically given to people who have problems with suicidal tendencies. Although many of us would consider tinnitus to cause some anxiety, it is very rare that it would cause somebody to take their own life. That is not why people are given Elavil in order to treat their tinnitus. Somewhere along the line, somebody with suicidal tendencies who also had tinnitus noticed that the problem was greatly reduced whenever they began taking Elavil.

One of the main reasons why people are against taking Elavil and other types of medication that are similar to it in order to treat tinnitus is because of the side effects. Elavil is serious medication and some of the side effects can be quite drastic. Although tinnitus is quite annoying and it can be difficult to live a life where you’re always hearing ringing and other noises in your ear, it also may be a tossup whenever you compare it to some of the side effects that you might experience. It is a good idea for you to discuss any of these possibilities with your doctor in advance in order to avoid problems in the future.

Although Elavil may be a possibility for you, there may also be some other things that you can do to reduce your Tinnitus. For example, you could try listening to some white noise whenever you’re sleeping or perhaps wear earphones which will put off a low frequency sound. These often offset the problem to a certain extent. There may also be some other treatments which you had not considered before. Make sure you talk to your doctor about alternatives.
