Call of Duty Modern Warfare took the top spot from many reviewers as Game of the Year in 2007 for the first person shooter (FPS) category.   With hardcore action combined with intense multiplayer game play, the Call of Duty series has long been a favorite of FPS fans.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 is the next title in the Call of Duty lineup.  Developed by Infinity Ward and produced by Activision, this game is sure to be strong competitor for 2009 game sales.  Available for the PC, Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony Playstation 3, this title has gamers chomping at the bit in anticipation of the game’s release.  The release date, as of July is November 10, 2009, just in time for Christmas holiday shopping.  In case you missed it, that date is 11-10-9, alluding to the countdown to release day.

The game will be released in three formats:  normal, Hardened and Prestige editions.  The normal edition simply comes with the game and no extras.  The Hardened edition comes in a steel book with a metallic finish, an art book and a token to download the original Call of Duty.  The Prestige edition will come with everything the Hardened edition includes, plus Night Vision Goggles that can see up to 50 ft. and an individually numbered collector’s display stand to hold the goggles (it’s a bust of Soap MacTavish).  The Prestige edition will not be available for the PC.  The anticipated game release price will be $59.99, with the Hardened and Prestige editions selling for $79.99 and $149.99 respectively.  Prices are always subject to change, so you’ll want to check with your local store or online retailer for up to date information

Pre-orders are available in store and online from retailers like GameStop and Game Crazy, and for online pre-sales at Amazon.com, Best Buy, Frys Electronics and Walmart.  Some retailers will have special offers when you pre-order, so check with these and other vendors to see what the best deal is for your pre-order.  Every pre-order requires a deposit (which may be refundable if you decide not to buy) and the dollar amount required for pre-ordering will vary from store to store.  Shop around; ask about in-stock guarantees for preorders and find the best specials before you commit.

Anticipation of a game this awesome is sure to drive every gamer mad, but if Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s predecessors are any indication, the wait will be well worth it.  The special Hardened and Prestige editions will likely be limited in quantity, so reserve yours early so you don’t miss out.  If you are set on getting your copy the day of release, be smart and reserve a copy so you aren’t disappointed if they sell out.
