Each summer on Thursday nights, you can find a band playing in Toga Square and the best part of this is that it is free. Simply bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy the music. Enjoy many types of music including Dixieland jazz, polka, swing and Christian music. Parking is also free in downtown but it is limited.

On Wednesday Nights at the park in downtown Sayre Pennsylvania, you can also hear the free concerts. Bring a chair or a blanket and enjoy the music with the concerts in the park series. Parking is free in Sayre Borough after business hours.

People of all ages enjoy these free concerts and no matter the type of music, you can see the local people dancing in front of the stage. So bring the family next Wednesday or Thursday night and enjoy the music. Concerts are held late spring until labor day weekend each summer.

Valley Play land in Athens Borough

In the early 1990s, the residents of the valley gathered to make a very special and safe place for young families to enjoy. The result was Valley Play-land and it is a good-sized area of family fun. Plenty of areas for children to climb run or jump, and several slides and swings make this a popular area for many parents.

Once a year the park is closed to add additional safe fill below all the equipment, other than that it is open to area families seven days a week.  Although the playground area is off limits at dark, the tennis courts and basketball area are open for older kids and adults. These are lighted areas, which cost a quarter per half hour.

There is a pavilion and picnic tables so you can have a picnic with the family.

Boat landings in Athens

Both of the boat landings in Athens are free to launch boats on either the Chemung or Susquehanna rivers.  The Susquehanna boat landing is just over the Sayre township line on Riverside drive, when the Chemung boat landing is in Athens Township.

The Chemung boat landing does offer a picnic table and is a good place to sit by the river and enjoy nature. Children are welcome but parents should watch them closely around the river.

Enjoy a walk

In the Athens Borough area, there are many older homes, which have been here for generations. Most of these stately homes are located on lower Main Street. It is a nice walk, on even sidewalks

The Athens Library was there when the town was first settled, and was a key turning point in history. A few homes were part of the underground railroad still standing and occupied in that area.
